TMS and MRI Studies

Study #1: Ages 55-85

Purpose: To develop a noninvasive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) protocol to help attenuate cognitive decline in adults who are experiencing cognitive decline and to establish a dose-response relationship for TMS.

What does it involve? Standard MRI, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS; see below); brief behavioral assessment (e.g., memory task)

Who can participate? Healthy adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment aged 55-85.  Male or Female. Must be right-handed. Unfortunately, you will be unable to participate if any of the following apply: 1) history of neurological disease, fainting, or seizures; 2) any electrical implant; 3) cochlear implant, 4) you are pregnant, 5) recent drug withdrawal, 6) have any implanted metal in your body, or 7) you are currently taking any psychoactive medications (e.g., anti-depressants).

Time Commitment: Two blocks, each consisting of 3-4 visits. The longest visit is 3.5 hours.

Compensation: Up to $400 for completing the study

Study #2: Ages 50-85

Purpose: We use MRI-guided Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to explore ways to prevent memory decline. To assess its effectiveness, we use behavioral tests and conduct MRI scans over a six-month period as part of our research protocol.

What does it involve? MRI scan, TMS; cognitive assessment (e.g., memory task); genotype test;  assessments with body worn devices

Who can participate? Healthy adults or adults with mild cognitive impairment aged 50-85.  Male or Female. Must be right-handed. Unfortunately, you will be unable to participate if any of the following apply: 1) history of neurological and psychiatric disease, fainting, Alzheimer’s disease, or seizures. 2) any electrical implant, 3) cochlear implant, 4) recent drug withdrawal, 5) have any implanted metal in your body, or 6) enrolled in another interventional study for within 6 months prior to beginning this study

Time Commitment: Initial screening session, three blocks of 11 visits each over a six month period, and a follow up.

Compensation: up to $180 or $220 in total for completing the stage I and up to $280 in total for completing the stage II, depending on the number of hours participating in our projects.

Study #3: Ages 50-85

Purpose: The overarching purpose of this study is to develop non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocols as a novel therapeutic tool to attenuate cognitive decline in adults who have been identified as high-risk for developing Alzheimer’s Disease. This project represents a potential step-forward in the development of a clinically feasible noninvasive brain stimulation therapy for individuals with MCI and AD.

What does it involve? MRI scan, TMS; cognitive assessment (e.g., memory task); genotype test;  assessments with body worn devices; EEG

Time Commitment: Initial screening, two blocks of 1 session each.

Compensation: up to $260 in total for completing the stage I and up to $280 in total for completing the stage II, depending on the number of hours participating in our projects.

Study #4: Ages 50-85

Purpose: An exciting new area of research explores how the trillions of bacterial cells inhabiting the gut and mouth influence our health as we age. In this study component, we will analyze the trillions of bacteria inhabiting your gut and mouth with stool and saliva samples, respectively, to evaluate their influence on the ageing brain.

What does it involve? This involves at-home collection of saliva and stool samples.

Time Commitment: One session of instructions, and dropping off sample after collection.

Compensation: $20
